Gearbox and clutchRepaired or replaced

Almost every gearbox job ends in the same question: is it worth repairing the box that is in the vehicle, or is it cheaper and quicker to fit a good used one? Because the gearbox has to come out either way, we tell you which side that question falls on before the labour is spent.

Describe the symptom on WhatsApp

Symptoms that usually point to the clutch

The revs rise but the van does not pull, particularly loaded or uphill. A pedal that has gone heavy, or one that has gone soft and bites right at the floor. A judder as you pull away. A smell after a hill.

Clutch work often takes in the release bearing, the slave cylinder and the flywheel at the same time, because they wear together and the box is already out.

Symptoms that usually point to the gearbox

Crunching into one particular gear, or refusing one gear while the rest are fine. A whine that changes with road speed rather than engine speed. Jumping out of gear. Oil on the driveway under the bellhousing.

Linkage and selector faults are worth ruling out first — they feel exactly like a worn box from the driver's seat and cost far less to put right.

Repair, or a used gearbox from stock

If the damage is contained — a selector, a bearing, a seal — we repair what is there. Where the internals are gone, fitting a used gearbox for a Sprinter, Master, Movano or NV400 from our shelves is normally the shorter route back on the road, and we can check availability against your registration in minutes.

If a part we sell turns out to be faulty, we replace it. You can also simply collect a gearbox and fit it yourself.
